Here stands Coit Tower. There's an interesting story behind its erection (pun intended), but damn if I know what it is. Essentially, an eccentric woman named Lillie Coit had a strange fetish for firefighters. She spent many a night smoking cigars, playing poker and who knows what else with the boys at Engine Company Number 5. She eventually married a wealthy businessman, and when Lillie died in 1929, she left a third of her estate toward the construction of a tower that was supposed to resemble a fire hose nozzle (though I'm sure one's imagination can evoke other images).
